Whale Sharks in Atlanta, GA!!
Ken was commissioned to design and create an original oil painting mural for the GEORGIA AQUARIUM SAND DOLLARS GIFT SHOP, located in Atlanta, GA. This mural depicts the habitat "OCEAN VOYAGER" that includes Whale Sharks, Hammerhead Sharks and Eagle Rays. The lightboxes in the counter display are also Ken's work.
KENNETH F. AUNCHMAN
MARINE ARTIST
Medium: Oil Painting I am the sole creator of each of my paintings. I do all the work personally without the use of any apprentices or assistants. All my work is done by hand with a paintbrush. My Paintings are spacious, expansive renderings of coastal and marine seascapes suffused with light. I always thought it fascinating to create the source of light in the work itself and have it come out at you. When people see my coastal and underwater scenes, they often look behind the canvas to find the light source. Closer inspection will reveal the luminous studies in light and shadow with the use of pinks and yellows to create that effect. My latest works are three-dimensional paintings of aquatic life. I call these images SEA3D. To create the illusion of depth I diffuse and mute the color in the background. In the foreground I use crisper, brighter colors that are hotter edged and warmer. The cooler colors recede and the warmer colors extend off the canvas enhanced further with the use of special polarized 3D lenses. There is quite a bit of work involved in the coloration to create the multiple levels in the painting. The outcome is a painting that allows the viewer to feel the sensation of diving among whales, dolphins and tropical fish. "I think art should be fun!"
